Fireplace size requirements for the M-6 grate:
The rear wall of the fireplace must be a minimum of 26" wide (dimension A), the fireplace floor must be a minimum of 16" deep (dimension B), the height of the fireplace front opening should be a minimum of 25" (dimension C) to allow adequate clearance to easily load firewood onto the grate. If your opening is less than 25" in height or your floor is less than 16" in depth, you should consider one of our shorter "S" series grates instead. Fireplace construction requirements for the M-6 grate:
It is important to understand that the Wall of Fire grate is a one sided unit. This means that the burning firewood is positioned between the grate and the rear wall of the fireplace. Having the firewood in direct contact with the back wall of the fireplace will significantly increase the temperature of the firebrick and may cause brick and mortar fatigue over time. Because of this we highly recommend you also purchase a fireback to shield the back wall of the fireplace from excessive heat. If you are planning to use a Wall of Fire grate in any non mason built fireplace such as a pre-fab, zero clearance, or metal fireplace, the addition of a fireback is absolutely mandatory.

I am sorry to say I have not had a the same results as many others have posted. I bought the 26" wide grate. I find that it does allow enough oxygen to get below the fire. The fires burns to slowly, causes smoldering and more smoke in home. It does not draft as well as my old standard fireplace grate. Also I have to stoke and work on fire more frequently to keep is going well. I plan on placing some concrete pavers below the legs to see if it works better. If not, I an going back to using my standard fireplace grate. I have used it for about a dozen fires with good dry seasoned wood. I also bought the reflective fireback. My heating systems thermostat is located about 20 feet from fireplace, my heat pump still kicks on even when outside temperatures are mild.

So glad I purchased this

Was thinking of getting a fireplace insert but hated the thought of shelling out $4000 bucks. Decided to take a $500 gamble on this instead. Purchased the 26" wide medium grate along with the fireback to install in my fireplace which is 31" wide in the back and 40 inches wide in the front. (was afraid the 21" would look odd/small) The 26" setup looks really good in the fireplace and WOW! Can't believe the heat. I have an old heatilator fireplace with fan vents on the side in the masonry. They never blew hot air until I installed this grate and fireback. Now my den is very toasty and the adjacent living room gas fireplace comes on much less. And lighting and maintaining the fire is SO much easier. I agree with another poster on this site... they should advertise this more... it is truly amazing. I never write reviews for anything but felt compelled to write one here because I was so impressed with the product.

Love this thing!

This is a great product. No smoke, good looking fire, better than advertised! The only possible downside is If you have a gas starter you may have to move it to fit properly under the grate, but its worth it! HIGHLY recommend it.

Works even better than I expected

We have a house built in 1918 that had an unlined fireplace. Our chimney sweep let us know that it would be a lot safer if we lined the chimney. The next year, at a large expense, we had a poured mortar liner installed. Previous to this, the chimney drew extremely well. After the liner was installed, the fireplace tended to smoke due to the decreased diameter of the chimney. We were really disappointed as we now had an expensive fireplace that was safe, but we no longer enjoyed using it. I had been searching for solutions on the internet when I came across your grate. It seemed too simple of a solution to be true. I ordered a grate and a fireback after I read most of the reviews on your site and on Plow and Hearth's site. I wanted to let you know how impressed we are with your product. We've had it for a week and we've already had 5 fires (more than we've had the whole rest of the winter). It's rare that a product works the way that it's advertised and yours really does. Thank you so much for making it possible to use our fireplace again!

Works well. Has a learning curve

This fire grate works well. It took several burns and some experimentation to figure it out. I now chop my wood a bit smaller. Even so, I use less wood to get equivalent heating to my old fire grate. I found that stoking collapses the firewall and tends to smother the fire, so I avoid stoking and I prop new logs up on the front horizontal bar of the grate. Also to work well, it needs a large bed of coals - to get this you need to not overload it at the begining - adding wood too quickly will smother the fire.

An excellent upgrade to our home's fireplace!

The Wall of Fire grate solved our smoky fireplace problems! It works as advertised and keeps the fire and smoke near the back of the fireplace which really helps prevent the smoke from escaping into our living room. Until we installed the Wall of Fire grate we could not use our fireplace without smoking out our home. Now we can enjoy family time in front of an easy to tend and cozy fire!

Mostly solved problem

This is definitely one of the first steps one should take if you're dealing with a smokey fireplace. Background: I purchased a 100yr-old house two years ago, and this was the first season I really took to having fires. Very quickly I was getting smoked out of the house, and a chimney sweep identified a non-compliant smoke chamber and small flue relative to the firebox. His advice was to have an Enervex fan installed; probably would've cost around $5K when all said and done. After scouring the internet for a cheaper solution I came across this website. I had noticed that if the logs burn towards the back of the firebox there was less smoke seeping out. Bought this on a whim, and gave her a whirl. I also bought a half face cord of kiln-dried wood. The good is that this mostly fixed the problem. For instance, I burned a fire last night for about six hours, and a slight wood-smoke smell wafted through the house by the end. Kind of like going into a restaurant that has a wood-burning oven. Definitely not concerning like before when I feared for my children's health. For the first few hours there is zero smoke smell. Only when the ashes start piling up on the firebox floor, and the embers start falling closer to the opening, does a slight smoke smell begin to permeate the house. Thus, it mostly fixed my problem but did not completely solve it. My suggestion to the proprietors would be to put a ash bar at the front of the grate to mitigate embers falling towards the firebox opening, causing smoke to seep a bit. Your fire also doesn't become foolproof. I've gotten better, but I've been smoked out a bit with this grate if I don't pay attention to the fire height. To constantly keep the fire going I always need to put two logs into the grate; putting one when the fire has drawn down will just result in a smokey situation. All in all, this mostly solved my issue, and was 1/30th the price of the Enervex system. And more heat is projecting into my living room and not being sucked up the flue. I would recommend.

Grate worked exactly as described and eliminated 100% of the backflow smoke in my outdoor cabana. Standard horizontal grate created at least 15% smoke backflow and this grate solved the problem! No more smoke filled cabana or soot on front of my stone work!

Better than I expected!

The Grate Wall of Fire is what was promised and more. There were some original changes to learn about how to stack the wood and light it. After I finished my learning curve it has worked flawlessly. Because I use wood cut from my property, I do have to be careful about starting with the symmetric smaller pieces. Once the ember base is built up, I place my one foot diameter logs in and they burn beautifully. Unlike a traditional grate, there is no need to constantly reposition the logs to get them to ignite and burn through. Additionally, our issues with smoke entering the room have ended. Finally, as a person who prefers modern design, this grate fits perfectly with our decor.

Absolutely grate product

I just purched the m6 fireplace grate along with the reflective fireback and it truly is such an amazing product.i can't even tell you how much money I wasted on all those other grates and I thank god I found you guys.it is 8 degrees outside and my living room got so warm I had to put shorts on even my wife who tells me all the time that she is so cold actually has her sweatpants rolled up and told me she's hot.i also want to complement what a great job on your website everything is 100% true I actually thought about getting a fireplace insert and you guys saved me a ton of money.i also want to say great job on the shipping I placed my order on Thursday around 1pm and I recieved the order Friday at 11:03 am I have never received a package that fast with free shipping.grate job making this product and I will definitely be recommending this product to family and friends

Best thing since sliced bread

We have a very large fireplace in a vacation home. It took a lot of wood to get a hot fire and constant stoking. We researched into different options to increase the heat from the fireplace and found this product. After the first time we used it, we weren't convinced it was that incredible, but then we rewatched the video and realized we had it too far away from the back. Now that we are using it correctly, we LOVE IT. We save a lot of wood; it gives off a lot of heat; it's easy to light. It would be an amazing gift.

I was looking a purchasing an insert at a cost of about $4.000.00 for my fireplace but was not happy with them because I like to look at the fire when it is burning and the inserts have a small opening. I did some more research and found the Great Wall of Fire and decided to purchase it and have not been dissatisfied with it for looks or performance. I found this item online when searching for some way to get my inefficient fireplace to throw some more heat into the room. After reading lots of reviews I also saw claims of it reducing smoke spilling out into the room, having to spend less time fussing with the fire and burning less wood. After about 10 uses I am happy to say that this grate and the heavy duty fireback I also bought have met or exceeded all my expectations. Throwing off heat..... definitely. Can now feel it across the room instead of having to sit right in front of fireplace. Less smoke..... absolutely. Burning less wood........Maybe a little bit, but not having to regularly tend the fire is a bonus. Just pile on the logs and let them burn. Had no trouble adjusting to slightly new way of building the fire. Just follow the instructions and it works great. Downside..... fireplace is a little harder to clean with the design of this grate as opposed to a horizontal grate that you can slide the ash shovel under, but not a big deal. If you buy both pieces it is pricey, but I don't regret it at all.

Although I now wish I bought a smaller sized grate, it works as well as promised! I would have selected a shorter and narrower grate, so it doesn't interfere with the aesthetics of the fire. SIMPLE to start, easy to feed, and great convection. I was doubtful at first, but the happily convinced!

FABULOUS! FABULOUS! FABULOUS!

I could kick myself for not having purchased my new grate and fireback 2 years ago when I discovered this website! 3 weeks ago we lost electricity during an ice storm in north Texas for 3 days. We burned so much wood and barely got any warmth from our constant fires! We finally took the (financial) plunge a week later and purchased the 15" tall, 26" wide grate and 3/4" thick, 26" wide fireback. Arrived in 4 days all the way to Texas during the holiday rush! How crazy is that? When we first received it, we were surprised how small it all looked; but since using it, We see it's the perfect size. Our opinions: What a difference! It gets so hot in the room we have to lower the heat by a few degrees; and the heat goes up the stairway as well. We use so little wood compared to the past, it's crazy! In the past we had to keep the doors closed at all times because the heat and smoke was blackening the woodwork and mantel around the fireplace; and smoke always came into the room! But let me tell you the worse: during that ice storm when we lost electricity, we made huge and constant fires because it was sooooooo cold in the living. The heat from the fire didn't reach the couches even though we moved them closer BUT it was hot enough to CRACK the granite bench in the front of the fireplace! Yes it cracked it!!! That's when we felt the tremendous heat that came out the chimney but straight up against the utter wall and fireplace surrounding! With the GWOF equipment, the smoke ALWAYS goes up the chimney and the heat straight into the room. The fireplace surround no longer feels hot at all; so now I can repaint the woodwork without any worries. But now I understand why so many houses with brick fireplaces look all black and dirty on top of the mantels! It's all in the grate! No questions about it. Great service, great great quality and great company to do business with.

Proving to be a great purchase

Gentlemen, After much research on a new grate for my fireplace I decided on your M-6. Ordering on-line was very easy and I was amazed at how fast my order was processed and delivered. I have had it now for about a month and am completely satisfied. It lives up to its marketing and reviews. Easy to start, generates great heat and burns completely. I now use my fireplace all the time. Before I was loathe to start a fire, because of the amount of paper and constantly tending it. Not anymore. Now I load it, with a starter stick underneath. One match and thats it. This thing is awesome. I don't know why they even make traditional grates anymore. These guys need to spend a few dollars on marketing. This grate should be in every fireplace. Some of the best money I have ever spent.

I put this grate into a Isokern firplace. I am very pleased with it. It is much better than the original grate. Easier to maintain the fire with less loading and stoking. Amazing ambience and really clever how it stacks the coals for great heat output. I thought the gaps would be too big and everything would fall out, but no it works well. I think it also uses much less wood. For ultimate efficiency you cannot beat an EPA compliant wood gasification stove, but for an open fire ambience, this is the best. I went and bought the firepit for outdoors now too ! I am a PhD wood scientist and have been using wood fuel for over 30 years.

Added heat efficiency and appearance. looks great and solid manufacturing. I found that putting 2 small short logs perpendicular to the back wall on the floor and stacking kindling and logs on top create better airflow to get the fire started. very happy with this fireplace upgrade.

I recently bought this grate, as well as a fireback. Originally I was unsure about spending this much money, but all doubts are now gone. This thing is amazing! It's well constructed, looks great in our fireplace, and most importantly, makes fires so easy. No smoky rooms, no sputtering fires. The fireback pushes a good amount of heat back into the room. Seriously one of the best purchases I've made in a long time! Don't hesitate. Just do it.

Amazing product

What a striking difference between my old horizontal grate and this vertical grate! The amount of heat coming back into the room, rather than escaping up the flue, has made my very small fireplace capable of heating 700+ sq ft. LOVE it!

I have a 30" tall outdoor fireplace and could have ordered the taller version but I am happy with my choice of medium. Not sure a medium would be a good idea for indoors since it throws off so much heat. I find that I get excellent results if I run through an entire log set and start to load in the second wave of large logs. We had a fire going all day Christmas Eve and it was very easy to keep it going and if I ignored it for a while we could easily come back and get it going by just placing logs on top. I lay them flat and try to fill the entire width and almost the entire height. Leave just a little bit of space between logs and it will slowly burn and really toss off a lot of heat. I pared this with the 3/4". 20" Tall 26" Wide reflective fireback. Just make sure you have two strong people to install the fireback. If you drop this it will do some damage so watch your feet and hardwood floors! Very happy with this purchase.

Great grates

This has been a great purchase. Completely eliminated smoke in the house. I do have to fairly often spread the coals at the base to ensure there's good air flow if I want a good fire, and I do find that things go much smoother when you have the right balance of kindling to splits to logs. In particular, if you don't have enough air flow in your kindling or enough kindling, you'll never get a great roaring fire and it's hard to come back. But after that small learning curve, this grate is awesome. More heat, less wood burned, more complete combustion, easier to maintain the fire once it's started. Great product.

Grate Quality

Here are the essentials that you need to know: The grate is a beast...it arrived at my home contained in heavy duty packaging. Be advised, if you are a senior citizen have a dolly handy to move it. We are so impressed with the quality of the grate. The "inaugural" lighting of our first fire with the new grate was literally a joy...the vertical design of the grate allowed the fire to totally illuminate the interior of our fireplace. The wood burned effortlessly and we did not experience any smoke smell in our living room. We were amazed at the amount of heat projected by the addition of the M-6 grate and the M-6 Fireback. We are very pleased with our purchase and just wish we had discovered Gratewalloffire sooner.

Toasty warm Mississippian

On the advice of a chimney sweep, we had a flue liner installed in our brick chimney (which was probably a mistake). After the liner was installed, our fireplace never drew well and our house would get smokey whenever we tried to have a fire. After a two years of not being able to use our fireplace, I was exasperated. Finally, through the wonders of Google searches, I came across the Grate Wall of Fire site and figured we'd give it a try. We ordered a vertical grate and a fireback and could not be more pleased! We have had fires burning for hours and hours and have not smelled smoke at all. It is a great product. We couldn't be more pleased. And the online instructions on how to measure your firebox were clear and accurate. We only needed to slightly move our gas starter toward the back of our firebox so it would be under the logs rather in front of them, but that was an easy fix. Thank you! Best Fire Ever! The combination of the grate and reflective fire back produce the BEST FIRE EVER! Just load the kindling, pile on the logs and light a couple pieces of fat wood underneath - instance blaze. The grate positions it perfectly back in the fireplace to draw in air and keep it going. Couldn't recommend it more!

Glad I found this product on the internet. Was getting pretty frustrated with the performance of my fireplace. Started considering insert. This grate does what it states. Less smoke and less stoking. Got the standard duty fire back as well. Fraction of the cost of insert and can enjoy the beauty of an open fire. When this set wears out, probably not anytime soon, I plan on buying the heavy duty versions.

M-6 Grate

The grate arrived in the time period specified and in the condition suggested. It is sturdy and well built. I had previously modified my traditional grate by putting bricks under the front legs to mimic this grate, which worked moderately well. This is a much better design and looks like it will stand up to a large number of fires without deteriorating. I paired it with the 1" fireback that I already had and it churns out heat very effectively.

Excellent grate. We upgraded to 1 inch steel. Solid. No smoke in the room. Good heat. We also got the 20 inch high fireback. A little pricier, but we’ll worth it.

I do not usually write reviews but I have been so Impressed with how well this Grate works I felt that I needed to take the time to share my experience. I called on a Wed morning and the gentleman I spoke to was very helpful. He said that where I live in SC I should receive the Grate by Fri. So I ordered the M6 but did not order the fire back. It was delivered Fri afternoon by UPS right on time. When I unboxed it I was extremely impressed with how well it was made. I had used the big box store fire grates in the past and they typically were wearing out after 2 to 3 years I expect this to last a very long time so that alone makes the price easier to take. It took a fire or 2 to get the hang of the best way to build a fire but once I figured it out I am Very Very Happy I made this purchase. I am burning less wood and I do not have to keep messing with it to keep it going. Oh yeah it puts out at least double the heat of the traditional grates. My wife was a little Miffed to put it mildly that I spent this much on a fire grate but she is now a believer and very happy that I did it. Last on occasion we would have some issues with smoke but after at least 10 fires including burning it all day on a Sat we have not had even a hint of smoke smell. I say do not hesitate this is a very worth while investment.

Miss

Arrived as scheduled, very heavy, well made. We removed gas logs from our fireplace and absolutely love having a wood burning fireplace. With this grate loading logs is very easy. We are getting a lot of heat and never any smoke. So glad we made this purchase.

Awesome!

We had trouble with our fireplace smoking. The chimney sweep suggested an insert costing a couple thousand dollars. We bought the grate from you and we literally have zero smoke in the house plus the fire burns more efficiently heating our whole family room. It’s a fantastic product. We would highly recommend it.

Like the wall, this product is superb. It almost fits over existing gas line...so I actually slide it out just a few inches to lite wood then slide it back against the wall. The wood burns totally, the glowing embers stack and heat into room is significantly better than ever before. Quality of product is just superb. The staff had recommended doing wall in at least 3/4 steel...and it all fits up perfectly. This is a company I will use first every time. They are just superb.

We love this! We had a draft problem and this keeps the fire towards the back and it now draws much better. The coals face the room instead of the bottom of the fireplace providing more heat into the room. We have also noticed a reduction in the amount of wood we use to get a warmer output. I recommend this to anyone.

This is genius

So easy to load wood. Keeps your fire in perfect order, the logs can't shift. It truly is a wall of fire. Easy to clean ashes up.

Great product

You wouldn't think there could be a strikingly different way of making a fire grate. This is a great idea, and works very well. Everything stacks to the back, most of the ashes fall to the front of the grate where they can be easily cleaned up. Very happy I bought this. Shipping was v. fast.

WE ARE AMAZED....

After ten years of not being able to use our living room fireplace, we installed the grate and the fireback and now not only does it no longer smoke, but the logs burn competely without constant stirring and turning. We will eventually replace the grates in our other two fireplaces. Incredible....

Finally, we are enjoying the fireplace

For over 14 years we have had to struggle with a fireplace that would let smoke into the room. We finally just quick enjoying it. Completely solved our smoke in the room problem!!

Despite having our chimney swept, we continued to have an issue with smoke going into the room such that we stopped using the fireplace. After reading the rave reviews, I ordered this grate (I already owned a reflective fireback). Much to my delight, this grate completely eliminated the smoke spilling into our living room. Works best if you get a draft going first with either a hairdryer pointed up the chimney or lit newspaper. Slightly cracking a window will also make for an optimal draft.

Grate and Reflective Fireback

The Grate Wall of Fire system is excellent. Thank you! The instructions received with the Grate itself reminded me of growing up in Springfield, MA in a victorian 2-family with a huge coal boiler in the basement. This is an efficient burning system that burns much less wood than my old grate and more than doubles the sustained direct heat output. Thanks again for your help.

M-6 Grate and RF-6 Fireback

I installed the Grate Wall of Fire with a reflective fireback that fit our fireplace perfectly. I installed in on the 1st of December and just got our gas bill for the month of Dec 2010....Dec of 2009 was 40 % higher. In December of 2009 we were gone for 9 days and I had the thermostat at 50 degrees while we were gone. Our home is a 2500 square foot dwelling with the fireplace centrally located.

M-6 Grate

I received my M-6 grate this evening. I loaded up the grate, lit one match, and for the next 5 hours enjoyed the best fire I've ever had in my fireplace. Not a bit of smoke escaped into the room and the ember bed was simply amazing. If I ever sell my home, I'm taking my Grate Wall of Fire with me and leaving the old flat grate in its place!
