Description

12" Tall, 21" Wide, 11" Deep. Approximate shipping weight in box: 3/4" construction weighs 25 lbs. 1" construction weighs 44 lbs.

Fireplace size requirements for the S-5 grate:
The rear wall of the fireplace must be a minimum of 21" wide (dimension A), the fireplace floor must be a minimum of 13" deep (dimension B), the height of the fireplace front opening should be a minimum of 20" (dimension C) to allow adequate clearance to easily load firewood onto the grate. If your opening is less than 20" in height, you may need the shortened version of this grate. Select the "customize grate height" option above if this is the case. See more sizing information on our measuring guide page.

Fireplace construction requirements for the S-5 grate:
It is important to understand that the Wall of Fire grate is a one sided unit. This means that the burning firewood is positioned between the grate and the rear wall of the fireplace. Having the firewood in direct contact with the back wall of the fireplace will significantly increase the temperature of the firebrick and may cause brick and mortar fatigue over time. Because of this we highly recommend you also purchase a fireback to shield the back wall of the fireplace from excessive heat. If you are planning to use a Wall of Fire grate in any non mason built fireplace such as a pre-fab, zero clearance, or metal fireplace, the addition of a fireback is absolutely mandatory.

Works as advertised
I'm the guy who drove up from Lomg Island after hurricane Sandy. We are sitting in our house with no heat except for the roaring fire, and your product works exactly as advertised. We can actually get warm near the fireplace now- it has made a huge difference, now all i need is more wood. No more smoke in the house either. Well done!

Maximize your zero clearance firebox output
We live in a townhome that has a zero clearance firebox. For many years we used the Duraflame firelogs. We had to sit down three feet from the fireplace to feel warm. We were considering retrofitting the firebox with a wood burning insert or a wood pellet stove, but both options were very expensive.Last December, I went to a party at a freind's house and he had the fireplace (masonry) cranking. I asked hime how this was possible. He proudly showed me his T-6 grate and told me to visit the Grate Wall of Fire website.I did and bought a reflective fireback panel ( mandatory for zero clearance fireboxes) and an S-5 grate. Both fit perfectly. This thing now radiates INTENSE HEAT to the point that we have to sit 10 feet away from the fireplace!!!! My wife and I love this cost effective improvement to our existing fire place. Highly recommended!!!

Best purchase ever
For years i struggled to get fires lit and would get lots of smoke into the home. I even had a fan installed to pull the smoke out. I purchased the vertical grate and it literally is the best purchase i have made in years! it is so easy to light a fire and only one time since i purchased it did i get any smoke. I highly recommend this product. This is my first ever product review because it truly is a grate product!!

Smoke issues solved, great fire
Got this to try and solve smoke escaping into the room. Highly recommend. Following observations: * This has for the most part solved the smoke escaping into the room. Fire starts fast and keeps to the back of the fire place. Air starts moving quickly up the chimney immediately. * Incredibly easy to get a fire started. Wood stacks well in this and because of the vertical stacking it lets good airflow into the base of the fire. Almost immediately the entire stack will be engulfed in flame. * Very easy to keep the fire going. Just toss a log on with out much thought because it will not collapse the stack. * Makes really good looking fires really easily. * Don't have to mess with the fire very much when its going. This alone has helped a ton with the smoke escaping as when I mess with the fire it has a tendency to leak some into the room. Fire basically keeps itself going with minimal intervention. * Love the way the fire grate looks in the fire place. It replaced a standard HW store fire grate. This is much more robust with much more presence in the fire. I have the standard un-ornamented grate.

Smoke problem solved
We bought a new home and had too much smoke getting in the house when we used the fireplace with an old flat type grate. The previous owners had the same problem, so I thought I would have to buy an insert for the fireplace to solve the problem at about $ 2,000.00. Ran across this web site while researching inserts and tired the grate. Problem solved. No more smoke in the house. Love it.

Problem Solved
Our fireplace smoked up the house every time we tried to use it. We considered an expensive fan for the top of the chimney but decided to try this grate and fireback instead. It is one of the best home product purchases we have ever made. Problem solved!

Super Grate
We are very pleased with this grate! The logs stay in place instead of rolling forward, which is a good safety issue. Also, the fire burns hotter due to the fact that you get more oxygen to the fire due to the design of the grate.

Love The Grate Wall Of Fire
This is my 2nd grate wall of fire and fireback. I was considering a insert but tried this 1st to make my fireplace help heat the home. With my first house I was able to get the 300 sq ft room with 8 foot ceilings up to 78 degrees after a few hours of burning. My new house has 16 foot ceilings and 900 sq feet of space and I am able to get the temperature up to 72 degrees after a few hours of burning. I was blown away by its heating ability but also the ease of maintaining the fire and efficiency of burning the wood is far beyond a traditional grate.

I was a bit concerned getting the 2" shorter would not make it tall enough, but it was perfect, still allows for several pieces of wood. The self feeding design and the "wall" of fire it creates is one of those things that makes you wonder why it this was not created earlier? Glad I found this. VERY sturdy as well, nothing like you would find at a home center. This is the last grate I'll ever need.

Fireplace Grate
I have tried every grate including the Texas fire grate. They are all setting out side somewhere around my shed. I use a common cheap grate. I had high hopes for the grate wall of fire grate after reading all the reviews. The grate has the highest quality materials and workmanship of anything I've yet tried. The problem is not with the grate but my wood. If you don not have perfectly dry wood the logs roll together tightly and cut off the air supply. I may be able to figure out how to spread the logs out more so air can get to them. I do not fault the grate so much as the wood or my lack of knowledge. However. a regular grate with a couple of bricks under the front feet lets me use less than idea wood to make good fires.

S-5 Fireplace Great 21 inch Wide
We have used this fireplace grate with a fireback for about two and half months now and we are very pleased with the product. We're still getting used to using it and making it perform the best. We have experimented with different links in different amounts of lead and we are settling on some longer pieces of wood. I'm glad that we had the height of the great 2 inches lower is this makes it easier to load board back into the great. I feel very confident that we have a good fireback in place and that it is protecting the back wall of the fireplace.

Makes the fireplace economical
I am used to having the old style grate with a big roaring fire with the opresive heat and using too much wood. The design is brillant. the coals are where the heat is. This unit uses so little wood after the coals are built up as to thier indtructions. The heat is very gentle and is felt at the toes first which is awesome. And thank you to the guy that recommended and stayed open late and waited for me to arrive.

We purchased the S-5 21" grate, shortened front for our prefab fireplace. We also purchased the 21" fireback. Both arrived promptly and were as described. We have been using them for about a month now and love them. Wood burns more slowly and we get more heat. We highly recommend the products (buy them together).

A friend recommended the Grate Wall of Fire to me. Every time I lit a fire in our new house (an older remodeled 1951 house), the fireplace smoked the house up so badly that we had to stop. Since I bought the Grate Wall of Fire, we’ve had a Fire almost every night with ZERO smoke inside! We are SO HAPPY with this!!!! It’s hard to believe that such a simple (brilliant) design made all the difference. THANKS FOR A GREAT PRODUCT!!!!

It’s brilliant - we recently built a new home that was super well insulated. We bought a huge new fireplace but it was smoking on us! Bit related to some wet wood mishaps but also due to a fairly short chimney and hyper insulation efficiency. Grate wall solved it all - burns beautifully, roars

This purchase was for a medium grate and back plate. They to work "GRATE" and no smoke in room. These are lifetime units and are highly recommended. BILL Q MINEOLA, TX

This was the third purchase of this item within our family. My sister bought the Grate Wall and recommended it to me. I bought it and absolutely love using it. My children all enjoyed it so much, that I bought one for my son and his new home. (He is the only one with a fireplace) We bought the fireback with the grate and have been amazed by the amount if heat it reflects into the room. The grate itself has made laying a fire more enjoyable since it is so easy to tend to. We love it and recommend it to anyone with a masonry fireplace. (Have not tried it in a prefab metal firebox.)

Solved smoke issue
The grate arrived a few weeks ago and I have now had the chance to run a couple of fires in cooler evenings here in Wisconsin. I have to say that this grate is very well built and is MUCH heavier duty than the original flat grate that was included with the pre-fab fireplace insert in our cottage. Fires are easy to start and this basically solved the smoking issue! Very pleased.

Not only is it easy to load, it burns clean, throws heat, and is a wonderful product. Our first one is more than 15 years old shows no signs of wearing out. "Grate" product!

Hi, we wanted to let you know that your grates have allowed us to use our two fireplaces once again. After getting our home resided and insulated, our old fireplace grates sent billowing smoke into our rooms, regardless of all attempts to preheat the flues. Your grates are fantastic and we are thankful to have found you!

Quality and Function
We purchased this Vertical Grate in combination with an RF-5 Reflective Fireback. I'm happy to report that it worked as I hoped - half the wood and half the ash while twice the hear resulted form the Reflective Fireback. Now I only poke the fire because I want to! It appears that standard grates force the fire to burn around the smoldering logs, causing a lot of the smoking I saw before, while the Vertical Grate allows the wood to burn to coals without the smoldering. Purchasing these quality products prove once again that "The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten."

This is an awesome upgrade. Our original stock grate frustrated us. I spent a ton of time adding kindling and fat wood to get a fire going but not anymore. Fatwood plus some commercial fire starter materials on the bottom then 3-4 logs and it's game on! It's sturdy too! I have no fears that things will shift. Wish I had found this product sooner

Expensive and totally worth it. I have a small prefab fireplace that I wasn’t able to use without the glass fire doors closed because of the terrible smoke condition that a fire would create. it was so bad that with the fire doors open, the smoke alarm would go off in my condo. This fireplace grate has changed everything for burning fires in my condo fireplace. I can smell smoke, but no more then you would smell for any other fireplace. It is totally worth the money!

Amazing
This grate has transformed my fireplace from so so to amazing. I bought the shorter 12" but 21"wide. I am not sorry. This is plenty, even for my big fireplace. It is a 50 yr old real fire brick fireplace still would like to get a rear heat plate, but concerned about the weight of the plate legs on such a small floor area in the fireplace. I do think could have created similar by placing a regular grate on edge and bending the top ends out. I do love my fireplace e again and saved thousands over the in beet i was going to buy.

Perfect
It got to the point where we stopped having fires in the fireplace because of the smoke that would billow out filling the room. The pull from the cold air return was the cause and I obviously didn't want to block that off or open a window with -10 temps outside to see if I could force some more air up the chimney. After searching high and low for a solution and about to give up I came across Grate Wall of Fire and their redesigned fireplace grate claiming that their design would solve this problem. While I was skeptical, I had to give it a try as no other solutions were working. I placed the order and the grate arrived on time with no issue. All I can say is that 10 fires in the fireplace later, not a single stitch of smoke has escaped that fireplace. This product does exactly what it claims. It's easy to build the fire and maintain it. Watching the smoke travel up the chimney and not back into the room is such a relief. I highly recommend this product to anyone having the same issues. Bravo!!!

Grate is even better than I hoped
So I wanted to use it some before I put out my two cents online. I bought the fireback and the grate. They both work together well, it does put out more heat now. More importantly, the grate allows me to burn less wood. I used to go through 5 or 6 logs in an evening, but with the grate, I now use only 3 or 4 at most. And with more enjoyment of the fire overall. I love sitting on our hearth and enjoying the heat on my back. This was one of the best investments we've made in a while. Thank you, Grate Wall of Fire!!!

Still Love My Grate After 3 Years
I purchased a shortened S5 and a fireback in 2010 to solve the smoke problem with my Heatilator pre-fab fireplace. I was impressed with the solid construction when it arrived. From the first use, I have noticed almost no smoke in the house, especially during the start up phase when the fire can be more smoky. The "wall of fire" occurs as advertised...the ember tower builds as the fire burns and after 60 to 90 minutes there is a glowing bank of embers that radiates heat out the front of the fireplace. After 3 or 4 cords of oak, I haven't noticed any wear on the grate or fireback. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this product and highly recommend it to anyone looking for more warmth, less smoke and less fire maintenance from their fires. I like the fact that this product was developed by a tinkerer to solve his own problem and then turned into a commerical success, all while building in the USA. I have a great (no pun intended) picture of the shortend S5 and fireback in my Heatilator if you want it.

Worth twice the price!
It is amazing that after thousands of years of our control of fire that this product is such a recent achievement. A friend of mine ordered one and the proof was in how well it worked. This product makes using the fireplace less intimidating for my family as there is so little work needed to maintain the fire. Wood is burned thoroughly leaving little ash and no coals. Our main fireplace was notorious for smoke, but now all of that has been eliminated with this grate. I even was able to place our andirons on the sides of the grate for additional decoration. This is the only grate you should order. It works exactly as advertised. I plan to buy another for our second chimney!
