Fireplace size requirements for the S-6 grate:
The rear wall of the fireplace must be a minimum of 26" wide (dimension A), the fireplace floor must be a minimum of 13" deep (dimension B), the height of the fireplace front opening should be a minimum of 20" (dimension C) to allow adequate clearance to easily load firewood onto the grate. If your opening is less than 20" in height, you may need the shortened version of this grate. Select the "customize grate height" option above if this is the case. Fireplace construction requirements for the S-6 grate:
It is important to understand that the Wall of Fire grate is a one sided unit. This means that the burning firewood is positioned between the grate and the rear wall of the fireplace. Having the firewood in direct contact with the back wall of the fireplace will significantly increase the temperature of the firebrick and may cause brick and mortar fatigue over time. Because of this we highly recommend you also purchase a fireback to shield the back wall of the fireplace from excessive heat. If you are planning to use a Wall of Fire grate in any non mason built fireplace such as a pre-fab, zero clearance, or metal fireplace, the addition of a fireback is absolutely mandatory.

Measurements were accurate and I was able to bit into fireplace over log lighter. Fire burns slower and coals get quite hot. Less smoke in the home and more heat with fireback. Heavy duty construction, I expect will stand up to the heat from fire and log lighter which I adjusted to put flame away from opening and into the logs. I recommend using more kindling of longer length at the beginning. Over stacking the fire early can create smoke. Also recommend not stacking split wood exactly parallel to promote good burning and oxygen use. Can still get some smoke if you stack on new wood at the end of the night. I burn the fire down and stack the coals at the back. Ash removal is not ideal, but I use flat metal spatula to remove periodically. Produces less ash than standard grate - more efficient burn. The best ideas in life are simple ones that are well executed. This qualifies.

This was my third grate from Grate Wall of Fire. My third because it works. It draws well, burns slowly and lasts. It is a good value and shipping is free. Many times shipping cost can kill the buying of a product. I have recommended these efficiency grates to many people and when purchased they are very happy with the product.

Solved all my problems

I have lived in the same house for 22 years and every time my wife asked for the fireplace action I would grin and grunt in anticipation of hours of restarting the fire if I got distracted and let the flame vanish. This winter using the same wood pile, I switched to 26” gratewall on friend’s advice. Starting and maintaining nice large flames that my wife demands has become effortless—once every 45-60 min I place one or 2 logs at the top of the “feeder”. Recommend 26” size as if logs are small, it will fit 2 end to end—really nice wide “wall” of fire.

Fantastic Product!

Your grate has made such a difference in our fireplace performance that it's unbelievable. My wife and I could not be more pleased. We can now sit anywhere in our living room and actually feel the heat without even getting near the hearth. It literally helps heat the entire house with little help from our heat pump. Excellent

Really pleased at how quickly it shipped and the solidness of the construction. We have only used it once so far cause of the changing weather but it worked great. It definitely feels warmer and make cleanup of ash easier. We are going to consider getting a reflective plate just to further protect the back of our chimney.

I bought my first gratewalloffire grate over 20 years ago, and I have purchased new ones for the four houses I have owned since. Every fireplace should use this product. It is the best example I know of ‘building a better mousetrap’.It works just as advertised . . . wood piled at the back burns better, coals exposed at the bottom radiate heat better, and smoke goes up the flue better. I am a registered architect and can attest that this grate has vastly improved a number of my fireplace problems.

High quality, recommend

Ordered this grate to keep large log loads from rolling forward in the fireplace. Works excellent for this purpose, it is very well constructed and does not budge even with 4 or 5 big logs stacked behind the grate. Also assists with easy starts and does indeed provide a "wall of coals/fire" after a couple hours of burn. (Very hot, almost need gloves to add wood at this point). Highly recommend. Hands down best fire grate I have ever owned!

Worth Every Penny

Fabulous product. I saw this fire grate in action in my sister-in-laws house. They hadn't been able to use their fireplace in 27 years due to the back up of smoke filling the room. I was having the same problem and was amazed at what I saw. A few days later I ordered the S-6. OMG!!! This fire grate is amazing. I use less wood, no more smoke filled room and my fire start much quicker. It is beyond a doubt worth every penny. Thank you Grate Wall of Fire!

I purchased the grate and reflective fire back and I'm completely happy with my purchase. I have been watching this product for over thee years and I should have purchased it sooner. Sadly, I purchased less expensive models and they didn't do half the job this product has done! I am able to regulate my fire to control the temperature in my home so we are not overheating because of too much heat or freezing because of too little. I'm also not using as much wood to keep the fire going as I have with other products. This product works exactly as stated and is of high quality! The only downside - I don't need to stoke the fire as often as I needed to with other products. :)

As advertised!

I really like the grate. Draws well, wood burns slower, no smoke and I find myself tending the fire much less--all as advertised. I didn't buy the reflective back, just the economy back because we never had a heat problem, in fact we use the fire screen almost all the time or the room gets too hot for my wife. Have already recommended to others.

Excellent as usual

We have several other products from this company and when we purchased a new house, one of our first steps was to get a grate for the fireplace. As usual, the service and product have been excellent. Our S-6 grate helps us keep the fire fed and roaring. It may not get too cold in Texas, but this sure makes it easier to enjoy a fireplace on the cool days!

Grateful

Our fireplace had always been plagued by lack of draw, allowing a great deal of fumes and minor smoke in the house. I was a bit skeptical at first but needed a new grate anyway. Upon receiving the grate, we immediately built a fire. First the ease of the fire lighting was incredible, it caught so fast, and before long it was going great. But after about 15 minutes, there was no smell. I was truly amazed how well this grate helped create the perfect draft up the chimney. Would definitely recommend and will be purchasing again when needing another. Thank you for making an excellent product

I was losing most of my heat and began to consider an insert. Insert was 6500 for the size of my fireplace.Your unit was around 500. I could not have been more pleased with the performance of the unit. I heat over 1000 sq feet to 72 in less than an hour and maintain it. You can feel the heat being forced five feet out. I have had this unit for six years and burn every day from fall to spring and save on my propane costs. I have to admit my wood is free. Time for a new grate but the back plate is holding on. >
